Calling All Music Lovers!

August 9th, 2007

If you’re a music lover then have I got a few web sites for you!

AmieStreet Logo
This independent social networking music discovery service helps you find new music without “breaking the bank”. All music starts out free when it’s first released. The price gradually increases to a maximum of $0.98 per song the more the song is purchased. I’ve been a member for a couple months now and have found lots of good artists. AmieStreet allows anyone to upload their music and the artist is given 70% of the profit. At first it takes a little practice to find the good music but you can find some great deals! As AmieStreet keeps striking deals with more and more record labels good music is easier and easier to find and the selection multiplies quickly. A few popular artists selling music on AmieStreet.com include: Barenaked Ladies, Tokyo Rose, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Last.FM logo
Self proclaimed “the social music revolution” last.fm uses it’s Audioscrobbler music engine it compares the music you listen to with that of other last.fm listeners to “make personalized recommendations, connect users with similar tastes, provide custom radio streams, and much more.” After downloading a small 4mb application, last.fm plugs into your favorite music player and “Scrobbles” the songs you listen to creating a personal music profile where you can:

  • create personal music charts automatically
  • find your musical soul-mates
  • discover and explore new music
  • generate your own personal radio station
  • see what your friends are listening to

A public profile page displays the your top overall artists and tracks as well as your top artists for the current week. It also displays your personal radio stations and journal entries. last.fm even has a Facebook plug-in to display your recently played music on your Facebook profile.

Pandora.com Logo
Free Internet radio powered by the Music Genome Project. You simply enter the name of an artist or song and then Pandora.com uses close to 400 attributes (musical details) hand collected by a team of fifty musician-analysts to create a free radio station full of remarkably similar songs, new and old. Using a simple thumbs up or thumbs down system you can tweak a radio station to your hearts content. You can create as many radio stations as you wish so you can always find one to suit your current mood. I’ve been using this service for a few years now and it is by far my favorite radio station, online and over the air. Unlike over the air radio Pandora doesn’t (currently) play any advertisements between songs and all of the songs are songs you’ll like! Pandora.com works incredibly well.
